What is recycling “rice husks”?

もみがら

Rice husks are the shells of rice. They’re the hard outer layer of the rice that we don’t eat. These rice husks are removed during a process called “threshing” which separates the edible rice from the rest of the plant.

Traditionally rice husks have been used as a material for various purposes such as improving the condition of farmer’s fields, as bedding for livestock and so on. However, so far these actions are not enough to consume all of the discarded rice husks. There are still large amounts of wasted rice husks which have to be disposed of in a damaging way, burdening the environment.

Therefore, at Poco a poco, we decided to make toys that effectively utilize the rice hucks which would otherwise be discarded. The “Nijiiro” series is made of a rice husk resin which is mainly comprised of rice husks. These carefully crafted toys are pleasant to the touch and have a natural delicate scent of rice husks.
